THE ARTISANS
DOILIES
The doilies are made by girls that have gone through the two-year program at the Blue Ridge International For Christ (BRIC) children's home in Leogane, Haiti. The girls come from a variety of backgrounds and locations in Haiti, but they are all there for the purpose of learning about Jesus and also how to support themselves later in life. After their two years are up, they will return to their families if they are able to. Some of the girls; however, are orphans or have families that are not able to take them back. In those cases, the mission works with local pastors and leaders to try to find a new home for the girl. Occasionally, one will stay at the home for several years until a new home can be found for her.
During their stay in Leogane, the girls go to school, learn how to cook, clean, sew, and do various other crafts. The most important skill they learn is crotchet. During the week, they practice crotchet for two hours every day. As the girls' skills progress, the doilies become good enough to sell. Each girl gets to keep the money she makes from these sales to help support her family.
When the girls return to their homes, they continue to crotchet and sell their work - creating a small source on income for many years down the road.
To read more about the doilies, you can read the "Doily Story," a small paper that is sent out with each doily. (PDF reader required)
